Free Off-Road Vehicle Training Across California

California State Parks and partners offer FREE expert-led off-road safety courses to California residents. Open to ATV and dirt bike riders ages 6+ on age-appropriate machines, and to SxS drivers 16+ with a valid license, these programs build skills for riding responsibly and confidently.

- Riding over obstacles
- Riding strategies, hill and terrain techniques
- Safe and responsible riding practices
Requirements:
- Bring your own ATV (some sites may offer loaners; a nominal fee may apply)

- Riding posture, shifting, and lower body control
- Turning and counterbalancing
- Riding over obstacles
- Riding strategies, hill and terrain techniques
- Safe and responsible riding practices
Requirements:
- Bring your own dirt bike (some sites may offer loaners; a nominal fee may apply)
- Must be able to safely operate the bike
- Must be a competent bicycle rider

Recreational Off-Highway Vehicle Association (ROHVA)
Ideal for:
Recreational drivers of side-by-sides (SxS) / utility terrain vehicles (UTVs) who are 16 years or older with a valid driver’s license.
What You'll Learn:
- Vehicle familiarization and equipment checks
- Starting out and stopping
- Low-speed steering limits
- Backing and turning
- Crossing obstacles
- Quick stops and evasive maneuvers
- Trail Etiquette and the Importance of Treading Lightly!
